WORLD STROKE DAY

World Stroke Day is Celebrated every year on 29th October to increase awareness and drive action on stroke around the world. Theme for World Stroke Day 2022 is " #Precioustime" which is focused on raising awareness of the signs of the stroke and the need for timely access to quality stroke treatment.
Brain stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and third leading cause of disability. In India, more than 18 lakhs people suffer from Brain stroke every year.
World Stroke Day is established by World Stroke Organization from 2004, then from 2010 it is celebrated to increase awareness. This year theme is created to support the 2021 theme " Minutes can save Lives".
Stroke can happen to any one, any time. Stroke occurs when the blood supplying artery of the brain blocked or narrowed or when the blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds. There are Different types of stroke.
1. Ischemic Stroke occurs when the blood supplying artery to the brain block caused by a clot.
2. Transient Ischemic Stroke or Mini stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain blocked temporarily
3. Hemorrhagic Stroke is caused either a burst or leaking blood vessel in the brain
SYMPTOMS OF STROKE
The loss of blood flow to the brain damages the tissues of the brain. The symptoms of the stroke show up in the body parts controlled by the damaged areas of the brain.
- Paralysis
- Numbness in face, arm and legs
- Slurred speech
- Trouble speaking
- Confusion
- Vision problems
- Loss of Balance
- Seizures
- Dizziness

High Blood pressure is the major cause for stroke in many people. Managing healthy blood pressure level helps to prevent stroke. Always check the blood pressure levels, take proper treatment for hypertension.
EXERCISE REGULARLY
Regular exercise keeps body healthy. Which helps to manage blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels in control.
QUIT SMOKING
Quitting smoking will reduce the risk of stroke
SAY 'NO' TO ALCOHOL
Alcohol Consumption can increase the blood pressure levels, which raises the risk of stroke. Quitting alcohol consumption reduce the risk of stroke
MAINTAIN HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT
Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of stroke. Maintain ideal body weight prevents stroke as well as prevent many non-communicable diseases
EAT A BALANCED DIET
Consuming balanced diet prevent stroke and treat stroke.
1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. - Helps to meet the requirement of vitamins and minerals. Include fresh ones than frozen or canned.
2. Eat more fibre - Include Green leafy vegetables to get adequate fibre. This will helps to control cholesterol levels in the body.
3. Eat healthy protein. Include eggs, fish, chicken, pulses and legumes. Protein helps to prevent blood clotting and manages blood pressure levels which prevent stroke
4. Consume Whole grains -Include millets, Brown rice, Whole wheat to meet required carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals.
5. Cut down on fats and sugars - Cutting down on fats and added sugars helps to manage weight and prevent obesity thus, reduces the risk of stroke
6. Cut back on sodium - Consuming more salty foods increases the sodium levels in the body which causes hypertension major cause of stroke. Cutting down on sodium intake reduce the risk of stroke
7. Try another way of cooking - Instead of frying use steaming, broiling, and grilling are healthier option for cooking to reduce the risk of stroke.
