SODIUM




    Sodium is one of the major mineral which the body needs to keep healthy. Sodium should be consumed in adequate amount. For adult men and women 2000 mg/ day of sodium is recommended.


SODIUM FOOD SOURCES

  • Salt
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Shrimp
  • Vegetable Juices
  • Broth and stocks
  • Pickles
  • Biscuits

FUNCTIONS OF SODIUM


  • Regulates Blood Pressure levels
  • Manages Fluid Balance
  • Helps cells to uptake Nutrients and water
  • Helps Muscle contraction
  • Improves Brain Function

    Sodium deficiency cause Hypotension - A low Blood pressure levels in the body. It can affect brain activity. Sodium deficiency is associated with sever diarrhoea and kidney malfunction. 

    High sodium levels leads to Hypertension which is the major cause of Cardio Vascular Disease and Stroke. High sodium levels has been linked to oesteoporosis and kidney diseases.

    Sodium interacts with potassium and chloride in helping the regulation of water in the body and to support normal function of muscles and nerves. Balancing the intake of these three minerals helps to maintain our body healthy. Diet high in sodium can impair the absorption of calcium. Maintaining sodium levels in the body helps to reduce the risk of cardio vascular diseases.
