    World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14 November every year. Established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation along with World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about health and economic threats posed by Diabetes. World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition.

This year’s theme, 

‘access to diabetes education’, 

underpins the larger multi-year theme of 

'access to care'.


    In India, Diabetes is on increase. The prevalence of diabetes increasing more in children as well as in adults. 

WHAT IS DIABETES?

    Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that prevents the body to utilize glucose. It is characterized by raised glucose concentration in the blood and alterations in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. This can be due to failure in the formation of insulin or liberation or action. 

TYPES OF DIABETES

TYPE 1 DIABETES

    Type 1 Diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes where patients depend on insulin. There is an inability of pancreas to produce adequate amount of insulin. 

TYPE 2 DAIBETES

    Type 2 Diabetes also known as adult onset diabetes develops slowly and is usually milder and more stable. Insulin may be produced by pancreas but action is impaired.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

    Gestational diabetes is defined as carbohydrate intolerance during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes incidence are increasing in India in recent years.

CAUSES

  • Genetics
  • Overweight
  • High Cholesterol
  • Age above 45
  • Pregnancy

SYMPTOMS

  • Frequent urination
  • Increased Thirst
  • Always feels hungry
  • Fatigue
  • Increased blood sugar level
  • Unintentional Weight loss
  • Slow wound healing


COMPLICATIONS

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Retinopathy
  • Nephropathy
  • Heart Disease
  • Diabetic Foot


FOODS TO INCLUDE

  • Whole Grains -  Brown rice, Whole wheat, Ragi, Bajra like millets
  • Pulse & Legumes - Peas, Cowpeas, Chickpeas, Rajma etc.,
  • All type of Green leafy vegetables
  • Other Vegetables - Ladies finger, Beans, Bitter gourd, Snake gourd, Ridge gourd, Chow-chow, Cluster beans, Broad beans, Cabbage, Cauliflower
  • Low Fat dairy products
  • Omega - 3 fatty fish - Salmon, Sardine, Tune and Anchovy
  • Egg white
  • Lean meat 
  • Nuts and seeds - Almonds, Walnuts, Chia seeds, Fenugreek, Jeera


FOODS TO AVOID

  • Simple sugars - Sugar, Jaggery, Palm sugar etc.,
  • Refined carbohydrates -White bread, Baked items
  • Deep fried items
  • Soft drinks
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • High fat foods

TIPS TO MANAGE DIABETES

  • Eat healthy
  • Take proper medication
  • Exercise regularly
  • Quit smoking and alcohol
  • Maintain Ideal Body weight
  • Regular check- ups with Physician
